Sweet Smelling Reflections: By Christina Keltner

Sweet Reflections: By Christina Keltner

Contrived

Here we see a demonstration of reflection and refraction. The name of the perfume actually appears twice more due to images produced as light goes through the bottle and the perfume. One is on the curved bottom of the inner bottle, and one is on the very bottom flat part of the bottle. We also see the image directly through the bottle as well. The way the light is reflecting on the curved inside of the glass causes a distorted image of the name written on the other side of the bottle. Light is traveling from air to glass, through the perfume and hitting the bottom of the containing part of the bottle creating a third image of the perfume’s name. This demonstrates refraction, where two transparent mediums with different indexes of refraction cause light’s direction to change. Each time the light hits a new medium, and thus a new index of refraction, the image is altered slightly due to the speed of which light goes through the medium. This sometimes causes the resulting image to be distorted slightly especially if the surface of the medium is curved. Also if you notice there is a slight blue tint to the very bottom part of the bottle, which is actually a reflection of the sky against the glass bottom.
