This engine shed had just been constructed when this photo was taken. On the left we see Hartley Mains (HMC) No 3, built by Robert Stephenson & Co in 1867 at Newcastle upon Tyne. This veteran was already 67 years old when this photo was taken, but still had another 25 years of work ahead of it.
On the right we have HMC No 20, built by Dubbs & Company in 1878. Both engines are jacked up and supported on wooden blocks having had their wheels removed for major overhauls.
The photo was taken by HC Casserley on a visit to Seaton Delaval.
