Screen work at this time was very labour intensive and young lads were often placed on the screens as their introduction to mine work.
The young lad in the front row has seriously crossed eyes, whilst the man standing to the right only has one arm. Injured miners were often placed on the screens as this would have been the only type of work they could manage.
