Terrible accident at New Hartley crossing in 1890 involving a miner called Thomas Laws who was killed by a train travelling from Newcastle to Blyth. Thomas lived at Cross Row in the village (ref: 1891 census for his father Joseph Laws)
The crossing was unguarded, the gatekeeper Elizabeth Dalziel had earlier retired for day having worked a 16 hour shift. She was paid 4 shillings a week.
The inquest was held at the Hartley Hastings Arms pub.
