Esmerelda & Protector of the Chilean Navy moored off Jarrow slake in June 1884

Both completed in 1884 at Armstrong Mitchells Elswick Yard. Esmerelda (left) was built for the Government of South Australia. Protector was the fastest cruiser in the world when launched.

St. Pauls church at Jarrow sits between the two ships and the huge Jarrow chemical works off to the left.
