First Baptist Church Cemetery - Walnut Cove, NC
Dona misunderstood my directions when we were looking for the Lawson Massacre grave site and pulled into this cemetery thinking it was our destination. Actually, the Lawson grave site was much further down the road. However, this proved to be, for me, one of the most interesting cemeteries I've ever visited.
When we pulled up there was a truck parked in the back part of the cemetery. A man in his late twenties or early thirties had a flower arrangement in his hand. I was scouting out things to shoot so I did not pay him any attention other than seeing him when he got out of his truck. He did not stay long. Soon he got in his truck and drove off.
Dona has COPD and, therefore, does not always get out of the car at every site we visit. As I walked the cemetery looking for things to photograph, Dona spied something that interested her. She got out of the car and called to me. I went over. What she spotted was a bench with the engraving, "In Memory of Rocky Lee Turbyfill". I did not think that was too interesting until I started looking at the grave. It was adorned with various objects expressing love and sadness over the loss of this man who had died. And, here was where the young man had placed his flowers. I was intrigued by this. According to the dates on the marker, Rocky Lee had been dead for over thirteen years. Yet, he was still remembered in the hearts of his loved ones.
A recurring theme you will find if you read the comments I place with my photographs is that of memories. Photographs record for us visual documents that help us remember. They help us get in touch with the emotions connected with that which is from the past. Photographs help us to remember. And, I firmly believe that as long as someone or some thing is remembered, they live on in the hearts of people, in the memories of those who remember.
