A leaflet issued in May 1949 by the newly created, nationalised Railway Executive who 'traded' under the name British Railways. It gives details of container based 'door to door' transport and the range of containers available for various types of freight traffic. Containerisation was seen as an important development of goods traffic; allowing ease of transhipment, removal of constant sorting and security of 'loose' freight and a move towards a simplification of such trade. In addition it allowed the secure movement of freight for the 'first' or 'last' mile from origin to destination by road if required.
The centrefold shows four images; a Glass Cradle Type SG being handled, a Small Open Type Type H (shallow) container being crane slung on a building site, the Large Covered Type (Type B and BD) here being loaded with what looks like tinplate cans, and the Highly Insulated Type AF at a Cold Storage facility and on a British Railways Albion flat bed lorry.
