What does UD stand for? : publicity booklet : United Dairies Ltd. : nd [c.1955] : dairy products

A small pictorial publicity booklet issued by United Dairies that uses a series of cartoon comparisons playing on the company's initials "UD". It also looks at the range of milk and other dairy products produced by the company and the back cover shows a modernised example of the one of the retail dairy shops they ran.

United Dairies was formed in 1915 by merger of various smaller concerns around the Wiltshire United Dairies under wartime pressure. Much of its business was concentrated in the London area where it had several processing and bottling plants that were the basis of the doorstep delivery service. In the 1920s United Dairies expanded by acquisition of other companies across Britain and also helped pioneer the production and sale of pasteurised milk. The company was to merge with rival Cow & Gate in 1959 to create Unigate.

The booklet is undated and uncredited but the style is mid-1950s and must be prior to the 1959 merger. It has the feel of a publicity item potentially aimed at school projects, given the description of the product range, and this copy survives in a school project collection. It is very typical of the sort of thing I, as a '60s school pupil, used to write off to companies for!

The company also produced other associated dairy products that included their Superity Butter, Superity eggs that were candled and graded at their depots, Diploma processed cheese spread and tinned milk that included Lacta and Diploma condensed milk and Regal Evaporated Milk.

United Dairies regional creameries were situated across the country and included; Whitland, Carmarthen, Wootton Bassett, St Erth, Lostwithiel, Totnes, Moreton-in-Marsh, Wood Lane, Hemyock, Chard Junction, Semley, Salisbury, Vauxhall (London), Calveley, Ecton, Uttoxeter, Willesden, Ingestre, Egginton Junction, Finsbury Park, East Finchley, Halesworth, North Elmham and Ilford. They also had a strong presence in Wiltshire including Trowbridge and Devizes.
