Merrie England coffee shop : shop façades and unit lettering : Halifax Borough Market, West Yorkshire : March 2026

Halifax's magnificent and marvellous Borough Market is currently undergoing a multi-million pound refurbishment but on a recent visit the internal scaffolding is now down and work continues on various internal fixtures and fittings. This has included uncovering some older shop signs that add to the wonderfully eclectic mix of façades and nameboards.

The small chain of "Merrie England" coffee shops, has been on the go for over 50 years and can be found in the locality of Halifax, Huddersfield and Brighouse. The façade is a wonderful almost Holywood "Robin Hood" evocation of Merrie England with the stone infill and - that lettering!

The splendid Victorian pile, and associated shopping arcades, was designed by local architects Joseph and John Leeming and opened in 1896. It helps complete what is one of Britain's most complete Victorian town centres.
