E. Longbottom 39 : shop façades and unit lettering : Halifax Borough Market, West Yorkshire : March 2026

Halifax's magnificent and marvellous Borough Market is currently undergoing a multi-million pound refurbishment but on a recent visit the internal scaffolding is now down and work continues on various internal fixtures and fittings. This has included uncovering some older shop signs that add to the wonderfully eclectic mix of façades and nameboards.

Unit 39 was once E. Longbottom and shows an earlier style of signwritten shaded lettering that I suspect has at some point been covered up and now is revealed.

The splendid Victorian pile, and associated shopping arcades, was designed by local architects Joseph and John Leeming and opened in 1896. It helps complete what is one of Britain's most complete Victorian town centres.
