Bassett Gray : Industrial Art : advert in : Shelf Appeal : August - September 1934

A name that would go on to be connected with the history of industrial design in the UK; Milner Gray. Gray (1899 - 1997) studied at Goldsmiths and after service in WW1 (involving the design and application of camoflage) by the mid-1920s he had helped set up this concern, the Bassett Gray group of freelance artists and designers. In this respect Bassett Gray were following in the development of industrial design in the US. By 1934 this group had formed the basis of the Industrial Design Partnership, where with Misha Black and Herbert Read, they became noted in the world of product design and publicity. By 1943 they had formed the Design Research Unit (DRU) that went on to have numerous commissions for many major companies such as ICI and London Transport.

Given the date of the advert, this being the back cover of the magazine issued in August 1934, this may be one of the last adverts issued in this name.
