A beautifully designed and printed descriptive brochure of the municipal Colleges of Art and Technology that were part of the City of Leicester's Education Department. It describes the history of the institutions that had their origins in 1870 and the founding of the Leicester School of Art. The institution developed into the Leicester Municipal Technical and Art Schools and their first purpose built home was opened in 1897. The name was changed to the Leicester Colleges of Art and Technology in 1924.
A wide range of courses, academic and vocational, were offered and these are described and illustrated in the booklet from which these extracts are taken. These included the School of Industrial Design which encompassed the Department of Printing and Book Production and it is from these two departments that this brochure sprung; it was designed by the Head of the School, A. E. Christopherson A.R.C.A. with technical assistance from F. C. Errington. I am fairly certain this was printed at the College and indeed, it shares some strong design similarities with other contemporary Leicester City Council publications that I am increasing certain had input from this source. The photographs are credited to A. L. Cook. The Department of Printing and Book Production was one of the various municipal schools of printing that had national recognition.
In later years the Colleges became the City of Leicester Polytechnic and, in 1992, this became the De Montfort University.
