Normandy, Brittany and Northern France : fly BEA : tourist folder issued by British European Airways : 1952 : artwork by Geoffrey Salter : cover

A charming leaflet issued by British European Airways in 1952 and that opens out to reveal a pictorial map of Normandy and Brittany in Northern France. The main map and cover illustrations are by Geoffrey Salter, an artist and illustrator who designed many book covers for Penguin Books as well as other publicity items for BEA.

Flying to France in 1952 would have been rather 'daring' in many ways as althouth fares were becoming more affordable it was still out of the reach of many. Before the Second World War Imperial Airways, the predecessor to BEA, made great play of the exclusivity of flights to Deauville. The fares shown here, with mention of the then £25 Travel Allowance allowed by the UK Government, are from £8 17/- up to 13gns (Guineas).

Traditionally the railway ferries, by this date British Railways, would have been the main way to cross the Channel for such a holiday. Indeed one of the ferries makes an apperance, amongst many other little visual puns, on the map. These include 1066 and William sailing to England and the more recent 1944 Allied Normandy Landings when "Bill" came ashore.
