Dordrecht via Harwich : poster issued by the London & North Eastern Railway, 1934 : artwork by William Lee Hankey

One of the many fine posters issued by the London & North Eastern Railway who were widely acknowleged as being amongst the leaders in the quality and breadth of the publicity and advertising. Dating from 1934 and by William Lee Hankey this poster advertises the charms of the near Continent and the town of Dordrecht in the Netherlands.

The LNER had acquired the steamer services and port at Harwich (Parkeston Quay) from the Great Eastern Railway at Grouping in 1923. The Railway marketed this link to the Continent, along with services from other East England ports, as competition to the near monopoly the Southern Railway had from south coast ports. The steamer services ran to both Flushing for daytime crossings, and Hook of Holland using the night services. Harwich was well connected then to both London and to provincial stations via through trains.
