Salute to the Elizabethans ... the Jensen Interceptor : advert issued by Jensen Motors Ltd., West Bromwich, 1953

Suitably puffed up for the occassion of the Coronation of HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 is this advert, typical of many at the time that trumpeted the 'new Elizabethans' and harking back to the days of the Good Queen Bess. Against a backdrop of the Golden Hind, Drake's flagship, is the Jensen Interceptor, product of the West Bromwich, Staffordshire, concern of Jensen Motors.

The name of the company stems from 1934 when the Jensen brothers changed the name of an established coachworks company W J Smith. They had gained a reputation for bodying other car makers chassis and moved on to produce their own range of cars; this is for the Interceptor that was first produced in 1950 and was produced until 1957 when the famous 541 was introduced. Jensen's also bodied commercial vehicles, often under the badeg JNSN, as well as some quite advanced aluminium framed bodies for various concerns. They even bodied a handful of bus and coach chassis. The family sold out in 1959 although their sports cars continued to be built until the collapse of the company in the mid-170s. Several attempts to reintroduce the marque have been made.
