"Showing Gas is Versatile ... " : advert issued by the Preston Gas Company, Lancashire, c1940

From the c1940 official handbook to the County of Lancashire, a plainer and slimmer volume that usual but hardly surprising given the wartime date, an advert for the Preston Gas Company. Preston was one of the smaller number of towns and cities that in the Victorian era had not bought out the local gas company and so it continued to trade as a private undertaking until nationalisation in 1949. The company was in fact probably the first provincial company to be formed for the supply of gas lighting in 1815 as the Preston Gas-Lighting Company. Their first gas works, in central Preston, opened in 1816 and by 1839 they had changed the name to the Preston Gas Company.

Expansion was steady, both in terms of production and supply area, and included two additional production works. In 1924 the company acquired a 'greenfield' site at Lostock Hall, south of Preston, and built a complete new gas production plant that allowed closure of the earlier works - an unusual move and comparatively late for the construction of a complete plant, and this opened in 1931.

The advert has a nice wee 'logo' and uses the then familiar "showing" figure that people would have recognised from cinemas. The text tells of both industrial and domestic use of twon gas and lists some of the well known brands of appliances available fromt heir Fishergate HQ and Showrooms. These include New World, High Beam, K.C.U., Ascot water heaters and Electrolux gas refrigerators.
