RAC - know your motorways, June 1972 - motorways open or under construction (strip map) 1
The UK's motorway network was expanding quickly in the first years of the 1970s and this Royal Automobile Club map folder shows the extent of the new roads as well as giving advice as to the 'rules of the road' and information as to signs and services.
This one side of the large fold out brochure has on the whole open and under construction motorway network at June 1972 and shows that much of the current 'spine' was in place with some notable excpetions such as the M5 south west extension, the M25 London Orbital and the M74 north of the Border. The other side has these series of strip maps showing individual motorways in more detail including proposed service stations. There are also some of the shorter-lived motorways such as the original intentions as to the A48(M) and sections now re-numbered such as the M66/M62 that now, around Manchester, form the M60.
