"The situation of The Cloister Press" - pictorial map in an advert issued as part of the "Printing Supplement to the Manchester Guardian", 1922
I've a soft spot for pictorial maps having known of, particularly, MacDonald Gill's many commissions for various undertakings and companies. They had their heyday from this date until the late 1940s and this one appears in the "Printing Supplement to the Manchester Guardian" that The Cloister Press produced and had a full page advert in. Sadly it shows no artist - the Press, at this date, used artwork by Charles Paine and Horace Taylor, both established illustrators and graphic designers and they could have done this but equally I'm minded of the map work of both R P Gossop, Kennedy North and Thomas Derrick who all undertook similar maps at this time. However some recent research means I can now say this was designed by W. Grimmond.
That aside it is rather fun as these maps often are and show the location of the Press on Parrs Wood Lane with both East Didsbury station on the LNWR and the Midland's Heaton Mersey station in close proximity. The area has changed somewhat having been subsumed by Manchester's suburban growth in the intervening years as well as closure of the Press at a date in the 1950s. The site is built over but there is a now a "Cloister Road" and a "Printers Close" that gives the game away.
