How modern! A phone in your car! It is worth recalling that it was Manchester along with South Lancashire and Merseyside that saw the UK's first 'mobile' telephony and that by the time of this advert it had been working for 8 years. The costs of calls were relatively high and even by 1963 there were, apparently, only 86 subscribers. It would be 1965 before the system was extended to London so, like motorways, Lancashire led the country! In fact Manchester was home to arguably the first telephone service in the UK in 1878. That said it was an important forerunner of something we now all so much take for granted.
