The London Area GPO Telephone Directory (Volume 1 in the national set) issued in the bound blue cloth version (you paid one shilling extra for that) in March 1928. Needless to say the directory is a treasure trove of information for people, institutions and companies.
This has the advert pasted to the cover in colour - for the Daimler Car Hire Company, based in Knightsbridge and with a SLOANE number it gives you an idea of the clientele they were after, as well as the sort of people who, at the time, would have been 'domestic' subscribers. For many working and lower middle class folk the 'phone at home' would be years away. The very period illustration is signed 'Boydell' and this is most likely to be Phillip Boydell (1896 - 1984) a Lancastrian who was a well-known designer and artist and who at this time worked for Publicity Arts Ltd., the agency covering Daimler's work. Boydell is best known for his WW2 poster 'The Squander Bug' and his typeface for the 1951 Festival of Britain.
