C&NW Train 212 south of Belt Line Junction
That's what the label reads. Belt Line Junction was where a branch split off south of Hurley, WI and crossed the Montreal River to run on the south side of the mining areas in Ironwood. This shot is a complement to my previous post of freight 282 at the same spot. In this case you can see Norrie Location over the 2nd and 3rd unit and Newport Location to the right of the first unit, both being on high terrain. This was train 215, the North Woods Fisherman, enroute to Chicago. Although the date says August 22, 1960, a Sunday, I'm inclined to think it was actually Saturday night August 21, 1960. The middle unit is one of the FP-9AM units "rebuilt" from an FTA in 1955, rated at 1500HP. Since it's got MU connections on the nose and rear it's in the middle of the normal 2 unit E set. In this case the leader is E-8A 5030-B, then 4053-A, and unknown E-7A. The reason for the middle unit is it's the power for train 211-123 and 212-124, the Wisconsin Lakes, that ran from Chicago to Land O'Lakes, WI, summer only, northbound as a separate train on Friday nights, and southbound on Sunday nights, being combined with train 215 at Monico, WI, for the rest of the trip to Chicago. I recall the story being the unit was returned to Monico from Land O'Lakes in the wee hours of Saturday morning in time for the NB NWF to pick it up and bring it to Ashland for servicing. The published schedules would not allow this, so I can only assume there was something wrong with it and the NWF had to wait at Monico northbound. If the picture is indeed on a Saturday night, then the unit is being returned to Monico for Sunday night's 212-124 out of Land O'Lakes.
