This miniature is a superb depiction of the Mass of Saint Gregory. It shows Pope Gregory I (Gregory the Great) celebrating Mass just as a vision of Christ as the Man of Sorrows has appeared on the alter in front of him, in response to the Pope's prayers for a sign to convince a doubter of the doctrine of transubstantiation. Saint Gregory is shown kneeling before the alter holding up the Blessed Sacrament and wearing red, blue, grey and white vestments, his Papal tiara sitting on the white alter cloth beside an open Missal (or Breviary). Behind the alter Christ is seen rising from the tabernacle held in the arms of another man. Behind the Pope an acolyte in blue and white vestments holding a lighted, long poled, torch. There is another person in blue behind the acolyte. The image is set within a gothic church that has a green, pink and beige tiled floor, a red curtain by the side of the alter and a window with a view to rural countryside. Stood against the wall, behind the acolyte, is the ladder used to nail Christ to the Cross and probably also the lance with which His side was pierced. The miniature is surrounded with a narrow, red, border.
The overall size of the miniature is 88mm x 58mm (3 1/2ins. x 2 1/4ins.).
