Consuegra, Spain

The famous town of Consuegra is situated in the Castilla La Mancha region of Spain about 60km south-east of the provincial capital, Toledo, and approximately 130km south of Madrid. The town, which has a population of about 10,000, is relatively unassuming but typically Spanish - plenty of interesting buildings, monuments and churches in the old, historic, central part of Consuegra.

But it is above the town where history and scenic delights await the traveller. Mainly through Cervante's book, 'Don Quixote' - published in 1605 - Castilla La Mancha has become synonymous with windmills and the finest examples of restored ones can be found in Consuegra, itself. Several of these beautiful mills spike the hill just outside the town; affording truly spectacular views of the nearby 12th-century castle, the town below and the flat plains stretching into the far-off horizon. The castle was once a stronghold when Consuegra was the seat and priory of the 'Knights of San Juan', the Spanish branch of the 'Knight's Hospitallers of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem'. Other windmills can also be found in Mota del Cuervo, Tomelloso and Campo de Criptana but those in Consuegra remain incomparable and provide a truly remarkable spectacle.

There are plenty more photos of Consuegra and other Spanish towns/locations if you take a look at my 'Albums' page, www.flickr.com/photos/36623892@N00/sets/ - thank you.
