August 2016 - View from the very top of Monte Igueldo on an overcast day. On the west side of San Sebastián bay is 'Monte Igueldo'. The best way to get to the top is via the old-world funicular railway which takes you to the 'Parque de Atracciones', a child-friendly theme park. From there, an extra effort should be made to climb the 5 storey, 18th century 'Torreón de Igeldo' (Monte Igueldo Tower). Built originally as a lighthouse, nowadays it's an observation point providing incomparable 360 degree views of San Sebastián, the coast and neighbouring mountains.
San Sebastián itself, or 'Donostia' as it known in the Basque language, is the capital city of the Gipuzkoa province within the autonomous community of El Pais Vasco (Basque Country). With a population of nearly 200,000, San Sebastián is a major resort situated on the Bay of Biscay. Its two well renowned beaches, the 'Playa de la Concha' and the 'Playa de Ondarreta', are framed by a picturesque promenade with highly regarded restaurants all along the way. In the cobblestone streets of the old town, the 'Parte Vieja', upmarket shops butt up against vibrant 'pintxo' (pincho) bars selling local wines together with bite-size regional specialities ...... and, of course, the San Sebastián Film Festival has given the city a truly international reputation. Finally, the city, along with Wrocław in Poland, is the European Capital of Culture for 2016.
