Mérida, Spain
With a population of just under 60,000, Mérida is the capital of the autonomous region of Extremadura. Founded in 25BC, it is a city with a huge and important architectural heritage and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. Among its most celebated "must-see" sights are the Roman Amphitheatre, the 'Puento Romano', the 'Temple of Diana', the 'Circus Maximus', the 'Arch of Trajan' and the remains of the 'Acueducto de los Milagros'. But there's so much more to see in this wonderful city which makes an overnight stay essential - but beware, it can get very hot in the summer!
