Cyperus articulatus L. (CYPERACEAE)
Lusaku-saku, nsaku-nsaku (Kikongo), jonc vulgaire (French).
A perennial sedge 80 - 160 cm long, having fragrant, sweet scented tuberous roots.
Grows in the low lying areas and is sometimes cultivated in the villages in Bas-Congo.
The root bark, seeds and shoots are used medicinally to treat sciatica, painful joints, fatigue, wounds, asthma, bed wetting, fear of noise and haemorrhoids (Kibungu Kembelo 2003 and also see Neuwinger 2000). The roots are also used for perfuming clothes. The stems are made into mats.
Plants can be grown from seed or by division of the whole plant.
