Mercury Astronaut Scott Carpenter was also an Aquanaut (undersea exploration) and retired at the rank of Commander in the US Navy.
From the Certificate of Authenticity for the autograph comes the following description of CDR Carpenter's career. "A member of the first astronaut group introduced by NASA in April 1959, Carpenter was the second American to orbit the Earth during his Mercury-Atlas mission in 1962. He also has the unique distinction of being the first Astronaut-Aquanaut, condicng experiments in both inner and outer space."
I am glad to have gotten the opportunity to get the autograph of a hero from my grade-school days.
