Setting the standard

This was an excercise to introduce students to laminating and pre-forming (the base), veneering, marquetry, parquetry and hardwood lipping (the top) and engineering lathe work (the brass components joining the top and base).

Each student had the same 'blue print' of the basic tray and had to carry out each task.

There was also a design element so each tray ended up different.

This one was made by Ben Fearnside, one of my first student intake and set the standard for quality of craftsmanship. He made the base light by cutting out a good portion leaving delicate legs. He also did some fine marquetry.

All processes were new to the students
