Diagram 1/507 was the last of eight designs of 20 ton brake vans built for BR. Seeing as the LNER designed express goods brake van dating from 1929 with a 16ft wheelbase was adopted by BR as the standard design after nationalisation I guess it was inevitable the former LNER Wagon Works at Faverdale, Darlington should build them with 3582 examples being delivered between 1950 and 1961.
With the BR Southern Region having gone "fully fitted" from the 1970's any brake vans that ventured into the region such as the one above had to be auto brake fitted or piped vehicles. There was still a need for brake vans on certain dangerous goods trains and the most popular type were the CAR designated vehicles which had dual air and vacuum through pipes.
The practice of putting yellow panels with "Air Piped" was quite common on CAR vehicles and distinguished them from the CAP designated vehicles with just a through vacuum pipe. In truth when the brown bauxite livery was replaced by the Railfreight red and grey for air braked stock that meant it was a dual piped vehicle making the yellow panels obsolete.
