Northern Lapwings
Birding Trip to El Hondo Spain – North Gate (Red Route), 24 January 2026
It was a beautiful morning with blue skies and sunshine, but very cold due to a strong west wind — made even more noticeable from the elevated bird hide.
I had hoped to get better photos of the Great Spotted Eagle I had seen and photographed on previous visits and previous posted photos. Although the eagle was spotted again on this trip, unfortunately it was just too far away for the quality of photos I was hoping for. Perhaps I’ll be luckier on next week’s visit.
However, in compensation — although still at a distance, but this time in excellent light — I was delighted to once again see a very large flock of Northern Lapwings. I managed to photograph them and now share the results in this slideshow. Noting that my opening and closing photos I have added for interest were taken by on previous birding trips. My last sighting of such a large flock was in December 2023, when I shared a similar slideshow.
