Cook's Petrel

New Zealand is one of the best places in the world for pelagic birds. We had three pelagic trips on the tour, and each had a different suite of species. This photo is from our only trip from North Island, specifically the Hauraki Gulf. This petrel was the only Pterodroma or "gadfly" petrel we saw on this trip; it was relatively common but they rarely land near the boat.
