Clenching Tools

For fastening the boards together with rivets, the boat builder needs three tools; clinker hammer, hoof hammer and hoof pliers. After putting on the rove, the nail is pinched off with the hoof pliers. When clinking the hoof hammer is held against the nails head with suitable strength, so that it bounces back for every hit of the clinker hammer.

"It is also important that the riveting hammer is matched to the seam. The hammer head must not be more than 150-200g on the færings. As you go up in seam size, the hammer weight can also increase. Best weight depends on both size and habit. A hammer of 225g for a 2 1/2 inch seam is perhaps suitable."
