Celestial Wonders

Comet "Pan-STARRS" made a subdued, but nevertheless beautiful appearance in the sky last evening (March 12, 2013). The comet was accompanied by a shining sliver of the new moon. The photograph was taken from a ridge crest in the Santa Monica Mountains, at the edge of the Los Angeles neighbourhood of Tarzana. The lights of Woodland Hills and Calabasas glitter in the foreground.

 

Other than a contrast adjustment and some mild sharpening, this photo is straight out of the camera. I recommend looking at the full-size image, which will enable you to see some wispy detail in the tail of the comet.
