This picture shows the basic properties of the reflection of light rays. When light rays hit a medium (such as a mirror) they bounce off and enter the eye, producing a second image. As above, when light is reflected from a smooth surface, the result is specular reflection.The rays coming directly from the top of the building and the sun are called incident rays and the rays that are reflected to the eye to form the image are the result of the reflected rays. With specular reflection, the incident light rays coming from the building and sun bounce off the flat plane of the Sears Tower as reflected rays at an angle that is equal to the angle of the incoming incident light rays. Flat plane mirrors form virtual images that are the same size as the actual object. Along the windows of the Sears Tower that are acting like flat plane mirrors, you can see the images the reflected light rays from the sun and also the top of the neighboring building form.
