View on the Korenlei in Ghent
Ask ten inhabitants of Ghent (Dutch: Gent) what the most beautiful place in their city is and nine will answer the Graslei. Second on the other side of the River Leie: the Korenlei, here in the picture.
Today this medieval port with its unique row of historical buildings is the meeting place par excellence. Young and old, inhabitant and visitor, everyone meets on one of the many café patios or simply by the water. This is the thriving heart of the inner city.
Throughout all of these enjoyable medieval surroundings, the 16th-century guild-houses along the River Leie made for a most memorable backdrop. The colorful gabled roof buildings are the sights you see in post cards.
Ghent, with a population of a quarter of a million, is a city in Flanders, the northern part of Belgium. Ghent is a city of history. During the Middle Ages, it was one of the richest and most powerful cities in Europe. It was once considered the second largest city north of the alps, after Paris. The impact of this rich past can be clearly seen when viewing the imposing architecture of churches and the houses of rich traders. The whole of the city center is restored in this fashion, and still breathes the atmosphere of a thriving late-medieval city state.
