Pale Cracker (Hamadryas amphichloe)

The Pale Cracker (Hamadryas amphichloe) is a species of cracker butterfly in the family Nymphalidae (20 members).

They acquired their common name “cracker” due to the unusual way that males produce a "cracking" sound as part of their territorial displays as they fly to interact with other insects.

The upperside of the Pale Cracker is light brown, gray, and white; forewing with a red bar in the cell; males with outer part of wing whitish. Submarginal eyespots of tan hindwing have orange scales outside a black crescent.

The wingspan is approximately 7,5 – 8,6 cm.

The Pale Cracker is distributed from Panama to Peru in South America, Costa Rica in Central America and the Caribbean islands. This species is found in rainforest and deciduous forest habitats at altitudes between sea level and 1200 metres.
