Bee on a Lily

I took the macro lens out of moth balls today and tried to photograph the bees in our little pond. I used the flash and did not know what I was doing but after taking many photos I sort of worked it out. I put the camera on Manual, exposed for the background. I then put the Flash on Manual and dialled it down until the bee was not blown out. If anyone has any extra tips for me about how to photograph insects I would love it. This is new for me. Not even sure if this is how you are supposed to use flash for macro.
