Eastern Redbud

Try to tear your eyes away from that fine specimen of man in orange and check out that Easter Redbud. Now you know this Redbud is a legume because to the little dangling peapod hanging off the branch. These little pods will fall to the ground, the shell will decay and there will be a sweet little Eastern Redbud seed ready for propigation... self-propigation that is. Hello, Seed Dispersal. Knowing that this guy is a legume, you know that this guy has Rhizomuim and Root Nodules down below working hard to convert atmospheric nitrogen into usable nitrogen. Eastern Redbud is also an excellent example of a Cauliflory, which everybody knows means that flowers grow straight out of the stem. The Cauliflory status help with the accessibility of these flowers on the trunks and limbs of trees. This can be an important factor in why pollinators are attracted to them. This beautiful Diacot has dark brown twigs and is abundantly spotted with lighter lenticils. Lenticils are the the small spots or lines (depending on width of the branch) on the surface of the stem that allows for the exchange of gases. Muy bonita.
