210 MM Mortar

The display reads:

210 MM MORTAR

GR19 21 CM SCHWERER GRANATWERFER

GERMANY WWII

Two hundred of these large mortars were manufactured by Skoda for Germany. They were designed so that the complete unit could be towed behind a vehicle. Riding above the tube, the base plate remained in place during transit.

In firing position, the wheels rested in shoes which were attached to the base plate by rods. Elevation was obtained by rack and pinion on the upright legs. The firing mechanism was built into the breech ring and was of the continuous pull type. The original Skoda prototype was 22 cm. However, the mortar was produced in 21 cm caliber to utilize German standard ammunition. This particular weapon was probably captured in 1943 by U.S. forces in North Africa.
