Jeremy's Ale House Front St New York / Yosemite update / Can't Update this Collection / Lightroom 4.4
Been pretty tied up most of this week. I upgraded my Mac to the Yosemite OS as my browser was out of date, FaceTime stopped working etc...it was time.
The install went well and I do actually like the new OS. That was kind of the good part...
The challenges were:
Scanner - software out of date. Off to the Epson website to update that. Worked 2nd time around.
iPhoto - update software. Off to the App Store for that.
Then Time Machine, the Apple back up facility to an external hard drive wouldn't work. That freaks me out a bit. I am obsessive about backing up data and my OS. I had a spare 1TB HD so I unwrapped that and installed it. That 'free' upgrade is starting to cost time and money. Time Machine started up working just fine on the new HD after I'd been in to the system preferences and worked out how to back up to 2 external HD's.
I'll spare you all the password re-sets I had to do. I was also concerned that Lightroom would not have migrated correctly but it did. All my pics were still there with the keywords attached, location info intact. All in all, I thought, it could have been worse.
Then I tried to upload a photo to flickr from the LR Publish Services function.
'Can't update this Collection' was the continual error message. So I went off in search of the answer to fix this 'minor' issue. Not minor at all to me actually. I rely heavily on this facility. Not only does it enable me to export photos to flickr but also geographical locations and keywords/tags to be imported as metadata with the pic.
Seems...there is no 'easy fix'. After searching through pages of complaints, comments and suggestions it became clear that Adobe blame flickr, flickr blame Adobe and they both suggest your browser could be the problem. I posted a question addressing this is Adobe Community and got 0 replies.
I also asked about this in the Lightroom flickr Publishing group and got a very helpful response, from Cletus Lee, who suggested I check out the "Export to flickr" Lightroom Plugin from Jeff Friedl. It's not a fix but another way to upload to flickr (through LR) that actually worked. Way to go Jeff! Thanks to you both for fixing this problem. Thumbs down to Adobe/flickr for not offering a fix.
Here's a link to Jeff Friedl's site should you be unfortunate enough to find the same thing happen to you. Even if it doesn't you might find this process more robust and user friendly than what LR 4.4 offers.

The snow's been falling again and it's the first day of spring! Enjoy your weekend and I'll catch up with your recent pics soon enough now my system is back up and running.
