Butterfly Mandala "sconce"
This heavy piece (about 5 lbs.) is made from found metal, auto gasket and hinge. The three digital mandalas, each 4" in diameter, I created from photos of a monarch butterfly taken by me. Each butterfly mandala is framed by the found auto gasket that wraps around the bent metal piece.
Butterfly looks just about to land as it hangs suspended from its wire at top of piece. Made with found hinge, wire, glass and bone beads.
In some cultures, butterflies are believed to deliver messages between the living and the spirit world--monarch butterflies particularly in Central America as related to Dia de los Muertos. I love the symbology of butterflies for death and rebirth (caterpillar ceases to exist, transforming or rebirth as a butterfly), a favorite theme :)
