Split rail fences at Cades Cove

These fascinating fences were common in the Smokies. Since we do a lot of fencing here on our farm, I studied them for ideas. They sure do not save wood! The chief virtue seems to be that the farmer does not have to dig a deep hole to imbed posts. Instead, the rails are just stacked on the ground. And they are stable [not prone to leaning or falling over].
