Wolf Maple

This old Maple is a good example of what's known as a ' wolf tree' - a tree that has grown out in the open, able to develop the full array of branches. Trees that grow up with close neighbors can't develop side limbs due to competition for light. All their growth is upward [making them good for lumbering, as the trunks will be tall and straight, with few branches along it]

This one was a beauty, probably between 80 and 100 years of age. It had the luxury of mown grass all around, since it's along the driveway of a farm.
