Nest Of The Gavia immer
The nest of Gavia immer, the Common Loon, is built very close to the water's edge, if not directly on it, as you can see here. For this reason, the wash from power boats and jet skis can be a reason eggs like these don't survive to hatch. The loon lays one to two (rarely three) large greenish-brown eggs with black specks. Their size ranges from about 8.7 cm in length and 5.5 cm in width and weigh approximately125-180 grams. Unlike most birds, the baby loons leave the nest as soon as they dry off after hatching.
