“We have been receiving food, accommodation, clothing and education from society and why not return some of it to the needy” was the spirit behind a gesture by a group of children of Helping Orphans to Prevail in Everything (HOPE) House here.
The girls aged 10 – 12 have managed to save Rs. 2127 in the past six months and they have come forward to donate the same to the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.
Bommi, a student of standard VIII at the Government girls higher secondary school in Katpadi, said that the motivation came from the Junior Red Cross society in their school.
“We used to collect small money from the visitors, guests and our relatives who visited the home and saved it in earthen hundis’ said Sujatha, her colleague adding that when they came to know about the recent earthquake in Haiti, from the Tamil daily received at the home, they had decided to donate the same to the victims and orphans in that country. The hundis were broken in front of Susheela Suryapraksh, Secretary of the Vellore unit of the Indian Red Cross Society at the HOPE House.
While hailing the gesture by the children, she said that the money would be sent to Haiti through proper channel. She pointed out that this was the first donation received from the young children of this district to help the orphans and the needy in Haiti.
She expressed happiness that the children, as true cadre of Red Cross movement, had turned themselves to extend volunteerism and humane concern for the distressed children of other countries as well.
Ruby Nakka, Director of the home recalled that the children were given project as soon as they joined the Junior Red Cross, to learn about the significance and joy saving money and they had utilized it for a good cause.
“It was surprising to know that they had made their decision to donate money to the victims of Haiti” he added.
The home has 15 orphaned girls’ children and picking up the volunteerism, they have decided to go to Home for the aged run by the Red Cross Society to offer manual help to the elders in distress.
