This is a photo of the demolition of the Sumner Field public housing in north Minneapolis in 1998. This 73-acre site in the shadows of downtown Minneapolis held more than 1000 units of low-cost public housing. The community was wracked with crime, the housing itself had deteriorated over time. Though the metropolitan region faced a shortage of affordable housing at the time, it was decided that the best solution to the problems of Sumner Field was to tear it down and redevelop the site. Hundreds of low-income families were forced to move from their homes to make way for the redevelopment.
