Ascending the Mountain
The state of New Hampshire holds the infamous great Mount Washington. This mountain is a very popular tourist destination. Crawford, New Hampshire is the home of this highest mountain on the northeast coast. There are three ways to reach the summit of this great mountain. One of the more popular and demanding ways to ascend the mountain is on foot. Hikers are forced to travel up rocky ravines and steep rock faces. The distance to the summits highest point is 6,288 feet so the trip is quite time consuming. I have personally hiked the mountain and the round trip took about 8 hours. The trip up takes you through a great variety of trees and flowers. As you reach the summit the trees get smaller and small and they are less dense. Since the summit is so high there no signs of trees or bushes anywhere; just solid gray rocks all around you. Many hikers stop overnight at the Lake of the Clouds AMC hut. This hut feature warm meals and bunks for hikers to sleep. It’s in a great location of about a two hour hike to the summit. Another popular way up the mountain is the road. It was originally made as a carriage road but now is paved for cars. There are a few pull over spots on the way up so the visitors can sight see. The road is extremely curvy and comes very close to the edge of the mountain with no guard rails. So drive very slowly and be cautious. There are some popular races that occur annually on the road. My grandfather and uncle have participates in a bike race that ascends the mountain. They road they bike up this steep road that is about 8 miles long. Another popular race that occurs on the auto road of Mount Washington is a foot race. People actually run the length of the road. Both of these races sound crazy to me. That’s not my idea of fun. The final and easiest way up this mountain is riding up in the famous Cog Railroad. This three hour trip takes you up 37.5% inclines. Normal railroad tracks don’t even come close to this with a 2% incline. As you board the passenger car you’ll notice that the seats are at incline. This is because the trip up is so steep that a normal seat would not even hold you in. You would slide right our. During the trip up the passengers in the front of the car are 14 feet higher that the passengers in the back. The trip is a little scary but very enjoyable and smooth. Whichever way up you decide to choose that final destination is amazing.
