Entrance to the Friars Bush Graveyard

Friar's Bush is Belfast's oldest graveyard, with the oldest headstone dating back to 485 AD.

 

Around 400 people in Belfast died from cholera in the eraly 1830s - they're buried in a mass grave here, known as Cholera Mound. This mass grave was reopened during the famine years (1845-49) to take an extra 5000.

 

The gates aren't always locked - there are tours on a Sunday afternoon. I must get round to going on one sometime...
