The reason why this airplane was shaped like this is because the otherwise poor Allison inline engines were fitted with turbosuperchargers to make them effective at high altitude. If you look behind each engine, you can see the massive plumbing for the engines. This pretty much required the airplane to have this twin-boom configuration.
