Vox Sciurorum
Illegal
See that sign? It's one of perhaps thousands of illegal speed limit signs in Massachusetts. Back in 1979 the town of Northbridge asked the state DPW for a speed limit on Quaker Street. The DPW sent out an engineer who thought the road was good for 45. But there was a slight curve 3/4 mile down the road that some people might find more comfortable at 40. So he told the town to go ahead and post 40 even on the straightaway. Notice the sign is not 45, like it should have been, or 40, like the state said it could be. Too slow wasn't slow enough and the town disregarded the law and posted 35 instead. The sign below says "RADAR ENFORCED." Nobody believed that 35 was a reasonable speed limit so the town added a threat.
